Exhibition Description:
85 steps, barely any traffic, an odd stillness: the title “Zu Gast in einer Strasse” is borrowed from a column published in the Basler National-Zeitung in 1974. It describes the Totengässlein as a place that resists rushed passage. A somewhat hidden alley that enables encounters, while preserving its historical and atmospheric density. Located on this street is the house at Totengässlein 5, once home to Erasmus of Rotterdam. On the ground floor, the gallery presents contemporary art today, while underneath a hole in the basement once created – according to the column – a link to the neighbouring building, where today’s Pharmacy Museum is located. Here, Erasmus is said to have passed his texts to Johann Froben to print in his workshop. Both the house and the street are shaped by these visible and invisible traces. Against this multifaceted backdrop, the exhibition brings together eight young positions from the Swiss art scene, each engaging through different formats with questions of value, power, history, and visibility – themes that have settled like sediments in the walls of the house. A space unfolds in which history is not concluded, but continues to operate – as echo and passage.
