«Wear a mask and your face grows to fit it» at For is a group show featuring Sebastián Dávila, Leon Höllhumer, Mati Jhurry, SPORT, Jennifer Merlyn Scherler, and Melanie Jame Wolf. The exhibition explores the concept of authenticity and the idea of growing into roles and identities that are expected of us. Drawing inspiration from George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant," the exhibition delves into the complexities of conforming to societal expectations and the illusion of embodying certain ideas.
The artworks on display reflect the theme of wearing masks and the transformation that occurs when individuals conform to external pressures. Through various mediums such as ceramics, film, cardboard, photography, fabric, and video, the artists invite viewers to question the authenticity of their own identities and the roles they play in society.
The exhibition also examines the power dynamics at play in shaping our identities, drawing parallels between historical narratives and contemporary societal norms. By blurring the lines between reality and illusion, the artists challenge viewers to reconsider the masks they wear and the roles they inhabit.
Magazine Release:
In conjunction with the exhibition, a magazine will be released featuring text contributions by Kim Naehoon, Niklaus Heinzer, Raja'a Khalid, and Jennifer Merlyn Scherler. The magazine launch will take place during the finissage on November 1st from 11am to 5pm.
