In her first solo exhibition at Galerie Francesca Pia, Virginia Overton presents new wall objects and free-standing aluminum sculptures. Overton's artistic practice is characterized by her intuitive access to specific places and materials, using simple, elementary, and often non-artistic materials that have practical value. The red and black lacquered aluminum elements in her works were repurposed from a US advertising company, originally designed for large corporate buildings and banks. Overton reassembled these elements into new sculptural constellations in her studio, focusing on the physical balance of the parts.
Her wall objects showcase striking physical qualities, revealing peeling paint, holes, bends, cuts, welds, and signs of weather. By presenting the works at eye level, Overton highlights the complexity of the surfaces, transcending the objects' symbolism into the realm of pictorial aesthetics. Rather than critiquing or sentimentalizing the American aesthetic embodied in these found abstractions, Overton allows the material's tenacity and motivic weight to interact playfully, creating an ambiguous potentiality.
Virginia Overton, born in 1971 in Nashville, Tennessee, currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her upcoming exhibitions include shows at the Hayward Gallery and Goldsmiths in London. Overton has previously exhibited at various institutions, including the Socrates Sculpture Park in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson, and the Kunsthalle Bern, among others. Her works are part of institutional collections worldwide, including the Kunstmuseum Bern, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
