In the late 1950s, the British fashion designer Mary Quant challenged the norms of couture shows by introducing short hemlines, leather boots, and jazz music, deviating from the traditional elegance. Valentina Triet's exhibition "Of manners, of trips" explores moments of distortion where spectacle meets the allure of the unfamiliar. Triet presents around thirty videos that transform footage from fashion shows into pixelated images, focusing on the movement, colors, and pace of the runway. The soundtrack remains unaltered, contrasting with the visually unfocused elements of the shows. The exhibition delves into the collision between avant-garde and consumerism in haute couture, questioning the commercialization of fashion and challenging conventions of taste. By alienating the images of the runway and reducing them to raw components of light, color, and rhythm, Triet invites viewers to experience the sensory aspects of fashion without the distraction of products. The videos, totaling around 3.5 hours, create a trance-like and disorienting effect, suspending the tendency for imitation in the fashion industry. The exhibition explores the concept of 'manners' as rules of behavior and 'trips' as a counter-behavior, an escape from the ordinary. Triet's work challenges the idea of enlightenment through travel and emphasizes the subjective nature of experience. Valentina Triet, born in 1991 in Winterthur and based in Vienna and Zurich, has exhibited internationally and is known for her unique approach to video art. The exhibition at Kunsthalle Winterthur is supported by various organizations and individuals, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the showcase.
