"HOW (hot or what)" is the second solo exhibition of Vaclav Pozarek at Galerie Francesca Pia. The exhibition brings together works from all phases of the artist's career, including early works from the 1970s created during his student years in Hamburg and London. These works depict models for spatial interventions conceived for public spaces, along with pieces made of rubber and wood, reflecting Pozarek's background as a trained toolmaker.
Photographs of architecture and sculpture play a significant role in Pozarek's artistic practice, serving as a common thread throughout his body of work. These images, taken since 1974, document various cultural spaces in a clandestine and amateurish manner, focusing on the acquisition of art history and challenging the official canon.
Pozarek's interest lies in the socio-cultural embedding of artworks rather than their autonomy, exploring stylistically heterogeneous phenomena and impure superimpositions that have evolved over time. His archival approach to photography, reminiscent of André Malraux's Musée imaginaire, informs his drawings and sculptures, reflecting his diverse interests as a graphic artist, typographer, and designer.
The artist's sculptures, often constructed from found materials like old wood, feature (anti-) colors based on interior paints, with a minimalist and constructivist influence evident in his work. Pozarek's sculptures incorporate functional objects selected for their specific qualities and integrated into sculptural arrangements that challenge traditional art forms.
References to art history and design traditions are prevalent in Pozarek's work, with gestures that have parodic traits while breathing new life into historical material. The artist's sculptures often function in the manner of a rebus, traversing design traditions and reinterpreting historical artworks in a contemporary context.
