Ulrike Ottinger (*1942) has been one of the most important figures in international avant-garde cinema for many years. Her diverse body of work includes not only feature and documentary films but also paintings, an extensive photographic oeuvre, as well as screenplays and theater productions.
Ottinger, who grew up in Konstanz, began her artistic career in the 1960s as a painter in Paris. Upon returning to Lake Constance in 1969, she founded the "filmclub visuell" and the gallery and edition "galeriepress," where she showcased works by artists such as Wolf Vostell and David Hockney. In the early 1970s, Ottinger shot her first groundbreaking feature films in West Berlin.
The exhibition at Kirchgasse features the screenplays for "Madame X. Eine absolute Herrscherin" as well as a comprehensive selection of photographs from the film's production, which Ottinger shot in 1977 at Lake Constance. These photographic stills play a crucial role in the development of Ottinger's visual and narrative ideas.
"GOLD - LIEBE - ABENTEUER"
This call from the Pirate Queen reaches the German forester Flora Tannenbaum, Josephine de Collage, the European artist; Betty Brillo, the American housewife, the psychologist Carla Freud-Goldmund, the photo model Blow Up, the bush pilot Omega Zentauri, and Noa-Noa, the woman from the South Seas. The all-female crew of the junk comes together under the commanding presence of the imperious "Madame X." What follows are adventurous scenes full of eroticism, jealousy, and murderous conflicts. When the ship returns to land, all the characters appear transformed.
In "Madame X," Ottinger combines the pirate film genre with a complexly edited and visually extravagant story that delves into themes of personal and societal transformation, the search for one's own sexual identity, as well as power dynamics, submission, and confinement in close quarters.
Parallel to the exhibition, a screening of the film is planned at a cinema. Specific dates will be announced soon.
