Tanja Roscic at Monica de Cardenas

After having presented her work at the gallery in Milano three years ago, we are pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Swiss artist Tanja Roscic in Zuoz. Here the artist will create a large installation made of ladders in the former barn and show new sculptures, paintings, and collages. In an intuitive way Tanja Roscic deconstructs the imagery of the present in order to analyze it and create a new world of images, while she investigates strategies of individual and collective identity. She makes use of an aesthetic charged with glamour, occult references, and the culture of protest - yet at the same time, her works keep their enigmatic, abstract character intact.

Roscic is especially interested in the symbolism of the human figure, expressed in the representation of young women, whose features are transformed by overlays, omissions, and fragmentations. The sculptures and installations make use of real and sometimes transformed pieces of furniture, presented as an expansion of the physical and mental sphere. Roscic’s works communicate force as well as sensitivity and often refer to alchemical symbols, reflecting the concept of transformation from one material to another. Yet in spite of their symbolism and the ironic reflections about media, the works remain reserved, delicate.

Tanja Roscic was born in Zürich in 1980 from parents of Croatian - Albanian origin. She has had solo exhibitions at the Neuer Kunstverein in Wien, the Kunstraum Munich, and the Modern Institute in Zürich, as well as gallery shows at Freymond-Gut in Zürich, Ltd in Los Angeles, and our gallery in Milano. This is her first solo exhibition at the gallery in Zuoz.

With her sculptures, installations, drawings, and paintings, the artist Tanja Roscic questions the strategies of forming both individual and collective identity. Her works show a strong and ironic confrontation between the "subject" and the viewer. Evoking mystical and surreal worlds, her works revolve around the themes of becoming, metamorphosis, and transience. Roscic's interest is particularly focused on the symbolism of the human figure, expressed in the representation of young women whose portraits are transformed by overlays, omissions, and fragmentations. Despite the symbolism and the ironic reflection on media, Tanja Roscic's works remain reserved and delicate.

She belongs to a generation of young artists capable of reflecting on mental and physical states with subtlety and relevance both in the artistic gesture and in the use of materials. In recent years, she has had solo exhibitions at the Neuer Kunstverein in Vienna, the Kunstraum München in Germany, and the Modern Institute in Zurich; she has also exhibited at the Freymond-Guth galleries in Zurich, Ltd in Los Angeles, and in our Milan location.
