Structures of Feeling
Structures of Feeling is a group show featuring artists who work on the subject of material nodes and networks that facilitate meaning and values as they are lived, endured cognitively and physiologically. The exhibition showcases historical artworks alongside newly commissioned pieces, many of which are being presented in Switzerland for the first time. These artists disrupt the normative narratives produced by media and explore the entwining of private interpretation with social standards. The artworks in the exhibition focus on rerouting the material components of the social to alternative figures and formations. Feeling is tangible and transformed through predetermined compositional procedures such as pattern, loop, frame, and leak. Artists like Sascha Braunig, Jacqueline Humphries, and Ramaya Tegegne reinterpret digital ciphers that influence how we feel and are felt, generating emotions through rhythmed compositions. Ghislaine Leung, Bea Schlingelhoff, and Carolee Schneemann examine structure at the level of communication and its circuits of distribution, cooling melodrama through looped sequences. K.R.M. Mooney, Alan Ruiz, Julia Scher, and Aliza Shvarts address systems of control through framing, managing subjects and pointing to infrastructure through sculpture and performance. Elizabeth Neel and Rachel Rose stage transmissions to channel flows, accumulating matter as it congeals and refracts. The exhibition explores the concept of "structures of feeling" as patterns and loops tessellate into palpable forms, inviting social movement and linguistic reform. The artists in the exhibition work to pick apart language, reforming it to save our shared skein, pushing boundaries and expectations in the artistic discourse.Curatorial Statement by Piper Marshall
Piper Marshall's curatorial approach focuses on the transformative power of language and artistic expression, drawing inspiration from the works of Adrienne Rich and Raymond Williams. The exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the structures of feeling that shape our perceptions and interactions, challenging conventional narratives and inviting new ways of understanding the world through art.
