In his book "Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?" (2009), Mark Fisher discusses the pervasive influence of capitalism on all aspects of life, making it challenging to envision alternatives. He references Alain Badiou's definition of modernization as a restrictive and profit-driven process that limits possibilities for the majority while benefiting the elite. This concept serves as the thematic core of the exhibition. The artworks on display, primarily sculptures, explore the current socio-economic landscape, highlighting constraints and contradictions. Marta Riniker-Radich's drawings depict mouldy interior details, symbolizing neglect resulting from economic policies that prioritize asset values over public welfare. Kate Mackeson's sculpture "Inflation" challenges notions of value and decline through an oversized wallet with empty pockets, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of material wealth. Sara MacKillop's installations play with the organization of time using calendars and office supplies, transforming mundane objects into miniature cityscapes. Morag Keil's experimental video projection captures everyday scenes in a mesmerizing display of light and movement, while Adam Gallagher's "Tensegrity Structure" explores structural integrity through unconventional materials like chimney sweep rods and climbing rope. Lawrence Leaman's wall sculptures evoke folk art traditions, blending vibrant colors with functional design elements. Philippe Daerendinger's barrier sculpture challenges traditional forms by incorporating expanding foam and metallic powder to create intricate structures. Richard Sides' collage and installation works draw from personal archives, creating immersive environments that blend sound, images, and text to provoke thought and reflection. The exhibition is a collective effort, with contributions from various individuals and organizations, supported by the Fondation Leenaards and other sponsors. This diverse group show at CIRCUIT invites viewers to reconsider the impact of modernization on our daily lives and societal structures, prompting critical reflection on the systems that shape our world.
