Mitchell Anderson presents a new edition and exhibition at the Centre d’édition contemporaine in Geneva, focusing on the genealogies and ongoing legacy of postwar rocketry. The rocket, now a contemporary global icon, symbolizes anxieties about possible futures and appears in various contexts from space exploration to media and children's dreams. Anderson uses graphite relics from WWII-era V-2 rockets to create coloring pages based on children's drawings of rockets, as well as large-scale wall drawings exploring rocket trajectories. His work delves into the wonder and violence inherent in the rocket's trajectory, emphasizing its impact and use.
Anderson's artistic approach incorporates cultural and historical materials, utilizing encaustic, embroidery, and writing to translate primary sources. Through colors and symbols, his objects challenge the normalization of cultural values and practices, inviting multiple interpretations that reveal contradictions in constructing a democratic environment. His work evokes residual histories and latent potentials, prompting contemporary art discourse to confront complicity.
Mitchell Anderson, born in 1985 in Chicago and based in Zurich, has exhibited widely in solo and group shows, exploring themes of history, culture, and materiality. His edition "Rockets" features coloring pages derived from children's drawings of rockets, alongside wall drawings and other works that reflect on the rocket's symbolic significance. The exhibition showcases pieces like "Red planet piece," "Beyond the Zero," and "Jacob’s Ladder," each engaging with the rocket's complex legacy and cultural impact.
