Marie Matusz explores the preservation of time and the collection of materials in her largest solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel. The installation, titled "Reservoir," transforms the space using industrial materials like steel, zinc, and acrylic, creating a site of resonance with dark tones reminiscent of soil or oil.
A sound installation enhances the experience, with deep bass sounds permeating the rooms and making the architecture resonate. Mirrored surfaces capture fragments of the space, blurring the lines between natural and artificial materials.
Reservoir Concept
Reservoir symbolizes containment, accumulation, and transformation. It absorbs, reshapes, and releases elements in altered forms, reflecting Matusz's exploration of history, memory, and meaning. The exhibition blurs the line between past and present, inviting viewers to consider time as a cyclical reservoir.
Artistic Exploration
Matusz's work plays with light, reflections, and spatial arrangements to create a timeless atmosphere. Wooden frameworks house paintings, blending storage and presentation. The exhibition space features corridor-like arrangements that transition between intimate and public areas, prompting reflection on the viewer's presence in space.
Industrial relics and architectural elements are integrated into the artwork, revealing layers of history and inviting multiple interpretations. A sound piece, "Reservoir," captures and transforms layers of time through existing sounds, creating a fluid and immersive experience.
Marie Matusz's environment challenges linear views of history, presenting a multilayered exploration of experiences and meanings.
