The Scottish artist Katie Paterson's work is characterized by its magnetic quality, drawing connections between uncanny details and ancient truths. Her pieces often use commonplace objects as motifs while exploring vast concepts such as the Earth, the solar system, and the universe. Paterson's art triggers curiosity and contemplation, leading viewers to ponder the mysteries of existence beyond the physical realm.
In 2023, Paterson collaborated with Sony Japan and Jaxa on a "space inspiration project" involving a nanosatellite equipped with a camera. She used this opportunity to capture images of the northern polar zone from a unique perspective, emphasizing the beauty and depth of the Earth's natural landscapes. This project marked a departure from her previous works, focusing on the collection of light from sacred places to create lasting photographic images.
Paterson's artistic process involves meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to exploring non-linear and non-rational thinking. Her experiences in Japan, particularly her interactions with Zen Buddhism, have influenced her approach to art-making. Through her work, she seeks to challenge conventional modes of thinking and inspire contemplation on the interconnectedness of all living beings.
