On The Temporary Balcony Behind The Dirty Window by Jessy Razafimandimby comprises a new body of work conceived for and produced at 1.1. It departs from a fleeting moment of the artist’s quotidian practice at his studio: the making of said temporary balcony from which the exhibition’s title derives. Mundane moments serve as a frame in which Razafimandimby sets out to explore the notion of cohabitation with objects and the inhabitation of spaces. In doing so, objects become mirrors of himself; they accumulate emotional and sentimental value; they reflect memories.

On The Temporary Balcony Behind The Dirty Window explores themes of childhood by opposing the interior and the exterior space, among others, through the use of the motif, plays with the viewer’s perspective and a performance. Each of these elements threads through formal as well as installative approaches of the exhibition. They intertwine and superimpose each other, revealing in their fleetingness and delirium, the poetics within them.

Painting, textiles, text and performance thus become interdependent - sometimes interchangeable - and are structured by the artist in a similar manner as the organisation of cohabitation between beings, states and things.

Jessy Razafimandimby

Jessy Razafimandimby is a Geneva-based artist. He obtained his BA in Visual Arts from HEAD–Genève in 2018.
