Among rows of grey houses, a colorful one stands out for the trouble-children. Inside, strained and smiling faces with pink padded cheeks stare through doors left ajar. Wooden train tracks, straight and curved, creep through rooms and afternoons. Not all sing along to "If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands." A dark-blond, gap-toothed boy still needs help finding a place in this little collective. He’s temperamental and occasionally aggressive, disrupting games, screaming, and pushing other children around. Mrs. Lisso knows how to deal with him, guiding them to grow 'heimelig' with each other.
Children express their fears - snakes, pigs, wolves, foxes, and big children who throw stones. The idea of the Sandman, as described by Nathanael, instills fear in their young minds. Freud's exploration of the uncanny through art, particularly in E.T.A. Hoffmann's Dark-Romantic classic "The Sandman," delves into the familiar turned horrifying, a concept of frightfulness related to the long-known and familiar but estranged by repression.
The German word 'heimlich' embodies intimacy, secrecy, and danger, moving towards ambivalence until it coincides with its opposite. In Hoffmann's tale, the uncanny is evoked not only by the figure of the Sandman but also by the uncertainty over animate beings possibly being lifeless objects. The revelation of Olimpia as an artificial doll in the story adds to the sense of the uncanny.
The exhibition draws inspiration from various literary works and the experiences of the children of Kindergarten Neue Straße, exploring themes of fear, intimacy, and the uncanny.
