The exhibition titled "«In Between Between No More and Not Yet» at Kunsthaus Baselland" features a group show with artists Judith Albert, Brigham Baker, Aysha E Arar, Saodat Ismailova, Bouchra Khalili, Klara Lidén, Christian Marclay, Eva Nielsen, Ursula Palla, Marijke van Warmerdam, and Ibtisam Tasnim Zaman.
The In-Between Concept
The concept of the in-between is explored in various forms—temporal, spatial, conceptual, and political. It represents a space of possibility, a moment of transit, existing in the now but not yet in the future. Stories are told, remembered, and anticipated, reflecting a state of transition and uncertainty. Nature's cycles of endings and beginnings are questioned, blurring the lines between what is known and what is yet to come.
Political economist Maja Göpel's perspective on society's current transformation, where old systems are ending while new ones have not fully emerged, resonates with the artists' exploration of in-between moments. These artists delve into political, private, territorial, and post-colonial spaces, revealing the complexities and opportunities present in the in-between.
Artist Highlights
Each artist brings a unique perspective to the theme of the in-between. Judith Albert's video works create dream-like sequences that blur the lines between reality and imagination. Brigham Baker's conceptual engagement with natural processes and everyday materials offers new insights into cultural phenomena.
Aysha E Arar's vibrant paintings and drawings bridge the gap between fantasy and reality, exploring themes of freedom and identity. Saodat Ismailova's video work delves into the rich cultural heritage of Central Asia, highlighting the struggles faced by women in a changing society.
Bouchra Khalili's video trilogy, The Speeches Series, examines language, citizenship, and work in the context of migration flows, empowering migrants through storytelling. Klara Lidén's installations challenge spatial boundaries, inviting viewers to explore physical and mental limits.
Christian Marclay's groundbreaking video work, Telephones, reshapes cinematic history by reinterpreting film clips around the theme of communication. Eva Nielsen's paintings create new spaces for reflection, blending architectural elements with landscapes and narratives.
Ursula Palla's installation, Empty Garden, questions the concept of emptiness and growth, inviting viewers to contemplate the cyclical nature of life. Marijke van Warmerdam's films capture poetic moments in time, offering glimpses into everyday life with a touch of mystery.
Ibtisam Tasnim Zaman's powerful paintings and installations address themes of LGBTQIA rights, neo-colonialism, and personal identity, drawing from her own experiences and cultural heritage.
The diverse range of artworks in the exhibition invites viewers to explore the in-between spaces of transition, transformation, and possibility, engaging with complex narratives and visual experiences.
