Modern Nature at La Becque

Conceived as an homage to Derek Jarman's Prospect Garden, the project at La Becque gathers international and Swiss artists for various artistic interventions. Inspired by Jarman's work and life, the garden at La Becque integrates local and native species into its lakeside spaces. The project includes site-specific artworks, film screenings, performances, and music events, all exploring the relationship between nature, the environment, and technology through the arts. The first part of the project opened with a festival and open-air exhibition, featuring a range of artists associated with Derek Jarman's work.

An Homage to Derek Jarman

La Becque | Artist Residency initiated a project inspired by Derek Jarman's garden near Dungeness, UK. Despite challenging coastal conditions, Jarman's garden flourished and became a renowned work of art. Curated by Elise Lammer, the project at La Becque includes a garden with local species, site-specific artworks, film screenings, and music events, all open to the public. The project aims to expand upon the themes of nature, environment, and technology explored at La Becque.

New Perspectives on Nature at La Becque

La Becque, dedicated to exploring the interplay between nature, environment, and technology, provides a platform for artists to delve into the relationship between nature and culture. The residency's focus on the Anthropocene, technological interventions in natural systems, and artistic representations of nature align with the themes of Modern Nature. The garden at La Becque serves as a metaphor for artistic exploration and intervention, reflecting the conflictual yet interconnected relationship between nature and human impact.

The Garden as a Platform for Artistic Exploration

Art plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between nature and culture, exploring post-anthropocentric perspectives and innovative methods of analysis. The garden at La Becque, developed in homage to Derek Jarman's work, provides a site for artistic debate and intervention. The project program includes gardening activities, public talks, and a full bloom festival with performative interventions, outdoor screenings, and site-specific artworks. The project extends into 2020, with collaborations and events planned with external partners.
