In spring, Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė travel to Altdorf for the first time to view the exhibition spaces at the Haus für Kunst Uri. Both the solo exhibition "Death by Landscape" by Dorota and Eglė and the foyer intervention Haus by IG Maisander reference the surrounding landscapes and our relationship to nature. Questions of landscape representation are central, engaging directly with the geographical and cultural space outside the institution.
IG Maisander has created a space constructed from straw bales and stools, inviting visitors to sit, read, listen, and observe. The collective brings impressions and ideas from Gitschenen, high above Lake Lucerne, into the exhibition space. The Alpine cultural landscape forms the heart of IG Maisander's projects and events.
With the exhibition "Death by Landscape," Dorota and Eglė present all parts of their Mouthless trilogy, placing them in dialogue with sculptural and installation works. The title is borrowed from Margaret Atwood's short story, where landscape plays a haunting role in the narrative.
The artists consciously move away from the Western conception of landscape as a passive backdrop, seeking new modes of representation through artificial intelligence. They question human supremacy over nature and explore our deep entanglement and symbiotic dependence on the environment.
The exhibition spaces are scented with hay and damp earth, creating a sensory experience for visitors. The artworks evoke ghostly presences and absences, blurring the lines between human and non-human, living and dead entities within the landscape.
The Mouthless trilogy proposes an alternative mode of storytelling, intertwining human and non-human voices and exploring magical rituals and folklore. The artists invite viewers to consider our existence within landscapes and the interconnectedness of all beings.
In Mouthless II and Mouthless III, Dorota and Eglė further develop these themes, using AI-generated landscapes and mythological creatures to challenge traditional notions of landscape and storytelling. The artworks invite us to rethink our relationship with nature and envision a more hopeful future.
The exhibition by Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė at Haus für Kunst Uri offers a thought-provoking exploration of landscape, nature, and human interconnectedness, urging viewers to consider their place within the world.
