Anne Collier's exhibition "Photographic" at Fotomuseum Winterthur explores the illusion of the innocent image, particularly within the realm of photography. Collier, known for her conceptual works based on found materials from 1970s and 1980s pop culture, uses photographs from magazines, advertising, record covers, book illustrations, and film stills as her primary medium.
By photographing these print materials with a large-format camera, Collier engages in a multi-step process that involves digitizing the prints and reprocessing them for further printing. This approach results in a thoughtful exploration of the various uses of photography throughout history.
Collier's work often focuses on images with emotional undertones, such as waves, eyes, and the portrayal of women in a romanticized, sexist manner. By staging and photographing found objects against a neutral studio background, she elevates these objects to the status of artworks, inviting viewers to reconsider their original context.
Through series like "Woman Crying" and "Women with Cameras (Self-Portrait)," Collier decontextualizes and reinterprets images from past eras, highlighting themes of vulnerability, self-presentation, and memory. Her works challenge viewers to reflect on the ambiguity of images that shape our perceptions and daily experiences.
