Adrian Schiess at Kunstmuseum St. Gallen
Adrian Schiess, born in Zurich in 1959, is one of the fundamental painters of his generation. His work has been internationally recognized through his participation in Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and numerous solo exhibitions. The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen focuses on his central serial format, consisting of highly nuanced painting on horizontally arranged panels. In his early career, Schiess painted standard-sized panels by hand, but he later transitioned to having his large-scale panels sprayed in refined colors and layers by a specialized car painter. Subjects taken from photography then appeared in screen printing on the painted panels, which vary greatly in materials and thickness. The painting will flood the museum's unique exhibition halls, interacting with the building's natural light. An anthology of the paintings created in connection with architectural projects will be published by Edition Cantz for the exhibition. This publication, created in collaboration with Ulrich Loock, will include a wide-ranging interview with Adrian Schiess, making this central part of his oeuvre visible in its entirety for the first time.
